REVIEW HAFLA April 2005

In April 2005, Michaella produced, directed and choreographed HAFLA, a unique celebration exploring musical contrasts between East and West through the medium of the world's most sensual performance art.

Hafla - a unique celebration

For probably the first time, the insistent oriental rhythms of the tabla accompanied the classical harmonies of the cello. To this unique combination, Michaella brought her inimitable art to what was widely seen as a revelatory performance.

Jamie Walton, one of the rising international cellists of his generation, began with the plaintive tones of Ravel's Kaddish; instantly Jamie's rich sound animated Michaella in a graceful and affecting dance that completely embodied this traditional prayer.

As Tim Garside, the leading British tabla soloist, followed, her sinuous transformation seemed the most natural thing in the world. Jamie rounded up with the furious Dance Finale from Cassado's cello suite, to which Michaella danced with a thrilling contemporary energy.

The show also featured original performances drawing on the various traditions of belly dance, inspired and improvised with Scottish, gypsy and modern rhythms.
